Graffiti attack at Kingspan Stadium over Grenfell Tower fire

12 January 2023

UK: Graffiti reading 'Grenfell' has appeared on walls and gates at the entrance to Ulster Rugby's Kingspan Stadium in Belfast in protest against Kingpan's indirect involvement in the Grenfell Tower fire in London on the night of 13 - 14 June 2017. Some insulation produced by Kingspan was present in the building envelope of the tower at that time.

The Belfast Telegraph newspaper has reported that local groups Act Now and Uplift in the Republic, in partnership with Britain-based 38 Degrees, previously erected a billboard in view of the Kingspan Stadium, expressing solidarity with victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster, in March 2022.

Celotex says product used in Grenfell Tower conformed to safety test

03 May 2018

UK: Celotex says that a rainscreen cladding system using its RS5000 polyisocyanurate foam (PIR) insulation board product has passed the BS 8414:2 safety test. The insulation producer previously announced in January 2018 that it had found errors between a previous test and the description of the system in the report of the test. It added that the rainscreen cladding system conformed to the BR 135 fire test. It is now notifying the relevant bodies and is contacting its customers about results of this latest test.

Celotex suspended supply of RS5000 PIR insulation board in June 2017 following its use as part of the rainscreen cladding system in the refurbishment of Grenfell Tower. The building had a fire in June 2017 that killed 71 people. The suspension remains in place.

British Rigid Urethane Foam Manufacturers’ Association responds to first government tests following Grenfell fire

01 August 2017

UK: The British Rigid Urethane Foam Manufacturers’ Association (BRUFMA) has said that the materials tested so far by BRE Group, following the Grenfell fire in June 2017, do not meet building regulations and would never be recommended or approved for use by the members of BRUFMA in a real building.

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has commissioned six BS 8414 tests using a combination of materials, including the make-up of the outer cladding system. The first aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding test, carried out by BRE combined an assembly of polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation used in conjunction with an unmodified polyethylene filled ACM cladding panel. Both PIR foam and mineral wool are being tested with each cladding system.

BRUFMA described the situation as ‘worrying’ that a number of buildings have been identified with this combination, indicating a lack of compliance to existing rules and regulations. However, it has advised that all six tests should be completed satisfactorily before any analysis is drawn and remedial action is proposed by the government. It also highlighted that PIR insulation manufactured in the UK and Ireland that is recommended for use in high-rise buildings is tested with the BS 8414 fire test as part of a complete ventilated rainscreen system.
